More than 550 competitors from all regions of Canada have gathered this weekend in Winnipeg for the 2023 Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC). Participants are competing against each other in over 40 skilled trade and technology categories.
Team Alberta’s participants for this competition were selected at the Provincial Skills Canada Competition (PSCC) held at the Edmonton Expo Centre on May 2 and 3.
A key feature of the Skills Canada Competition is introducing careers in the skilled trades to over 12,000 youth who are expected to visit the competition. At the competition, students will experience the trades through virtual reality and hands-on learning.
During an interview with CTV news, Skills Canada Vice-President Sue LeFort said, “Youth can come and try hands-on trade activities in all different areas, from plumbing and pipefitting to welding or machining… and a lot of the competitors are in secondary, post-secondary, and apprentices on their way to their red seal.”
