Update to Canadian Model

Construction Labour Relations Alberta (CLRA) is notifying our contractors that effective May 1, 2023 there have been two amendments to the Canadian Model for Providing a Safe Workplace (The Canadian Model) Version 6.0.

The two amendments were identified and approved by the COAA Board of Directors and ESC Executive Team under the revised Canadian Model Version 6.1. CLRA actively participated in the five-year review cycle as a member of the Canadian Model Review Committee.

The amendments are:

Amendments to Section 3.2 (Employee Compliance)
Add New Phrasing:  3.2 (a): “Prior to commencing work, an employee shall notify the supervisor or manager of the use of any drug that has potentially unsafe side effects that may impact the employee’s ability to safely perform their duties.”

Amendments to Section 4.8 (Oral Fluid Testing)
Replace 4.8.2 to Include Phrasing: “Oral fluid laboratory testing may be permitted for site-access testing,” (all language following remains unchanged).

For further information, CLRA stakeholders are encouraged to access the revised Canadian Model Version 6.1 via the COAA website and the Energy Safety Canada website.
