In Statistics Canada’s June 2023 Labour Force Survey, Canada saw its unemployment rate rise from 5.2 per cent to 5.4 per cent, while Alberta remained stable at 5.7 per cent. These numbers may sound alarming, but over the past 12 months, Alberta’s employment has grown by 2.8 per cent, well above the national average of 1.9 per cent.
“Alberta continues to be the economic and job creation engine of Canada with our highly skilled workforce, business-friendly policies, diversified economy and affordable and exceptional lifestyle. Our robust economy continues to grow, creating jobs across our province and reinforcing the Alberta Advantage,” said Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade Matt Jones.
“June’s numbers continue to demonstrate Alberta’s strong economy with 10,600 more employed workers. The unemployment rate remains the same while the number of full-time jobs continues to increase on a month-over-month basis, with nearly all of last month’s job increases being full-time. Most of this job growth is coming from the private and services-producing sectors.”
Since February 2023, Alberta’s construction industry has experienced a substantial rise in employment, with the number of workers increasing from 233,200 to 244,900. In contrast, Ontario’s construction industry saw a modest upturn from 600,000 to 600,700, while British Columbia witnessed a decline from 256,000 to 232,800.
