September 19th – Day of Mourning for Queen Elizabeth II

On Monday, the Prime Minister announced that federal employees would be granted a day off on Monday September 19th to mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. This day off does not apply to all employees in industries regulated by the federal government such as banks, airlines, or post offices. It has not been declared an official statutory holiday prospectively.

What does that mean for your workers covered by CLRA collective agreements?

At around noon on September 14th, the Alberta Government announced the province is declaring Monday the 19th as a “provincial day of mourning”. There will be an outdoor ceremony in honour of Her late Majesty at the Alberta legislature at 10 a.m. on Sept. 19th beginning with a moment of silence. The government further stated that “Workplaces, schools, offices and retail stores are encouraged to also observe the moment of silence.”

As neither the Federal nor the Provincial Governments have officially adopted the 19th as a Statutory Holiday, there is no requirement to provide a day off with pay, nor pay overtime for work performed on this day.
